Rowing

86% of your muscles, one machine, no impact.

The rowing erg is the most efficient full-body cardio machine ever built. Every stroke is legs → core → arms, and every return is arms → core → legs. Get the sequence right and 20 minutes does more than 40 minutes of half-hearted elliptical.

Why it works

  • Recruits legs, back, core and arms in one movement
  • Low impact with high calorie burn
  • Precise, repeatable metrics (split, stroke rate)
  • Excellent for interval training

What you need

  • Rowing erg (Concept2, water rower, or gym machine)
  • Flat shoes
  • Towel

Beginner tips

  • Drive with the legs first — arms bend last, straighten first.
  • Aim for a stroke rate of 20–24 for endurance work, not 32.
  • Watch your 500m split, not the calorie counter.
  • Sit tall; rounding the lower back is where rowing back pain comes from.

Questions

How long should I row as a beginner?

Start with 15–20 minutes of easy rowing at a stroke rate of 20–22, three times per week, then add 3–5 minutes weekly.

Is rowing better than running?

It trains the same aerobic system with far less impact and more upper-body involvement, but running builds more bone density. Many people do both.
